Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1923 Babe Ruth makes a postseason exhibition appearance in a Giants uniform.

Basketball

  • In 1967 the New Jersey Americans (later NY/NJ Nets) play their first ABA game.

Boxing

  • In 1964 future undisputed world heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier dominates German Hans Huber for an easy points win and the Olympic heavyweight gold medal in Tokyo.

College Football

  • In 1903 at the 8th Iron Bowl, Alabama beats Auburn 18-6 in Montgomery.

Football

  • In 2000 the “Monday Night Miracle”, down 30-7 at the end of the third quarter, New York Jets pull together an improbable comeback with 4 touchdowns and a field goal in the fourth quarter, eventually defeating the Miami Dolphins 40-37 in overtime.

Hockey

  • In 1997 Les Alexander, owner of Houston Rockets buys NHL’s Edmonton Oilers.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1871 Columbia & Sappho (US) beat Livonia (UK) in the third America’s Cup.
