Baseball

  • In 1930 the Baseball Rules Committee greatly revises the rule book, stating that a ball bouncing into stands is not a HR, now a double.

Boxing

  • In 1986 James “Bone Crusher” Smith TKO’s WBA champ Tim Witherspoon in Madison Square Garden.

College Basketball

  • In 1987 Oklahoma sets NCAA record of 33 steals versus Centenary.

College Football

  • In 1950 the 16th Heisman Trophy Award is given to Vic Janowicz of Ohio State (HB).

Golf

  • In 1899 George F Bryant of Boston patents the wooden golf tee.

Hockey

  • In 1933 Eddie Shore hits Toronto Maple Leaf star Ace Bailey from behind, fracturing his skull and ending his career.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1969 decathlon Bill Toomey achieves a world record-score of 8417 points.

NBA

  • In 1987 Mookie Blaylock sets NBA record of 13 steals in a game.

NFL

  • In 1965 Chicago halfback Gale Sayers ties NFL record for most touchdowns in a game with 6 in 61–20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers at Wrigley Field.
