Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1938 Major League Baseball agrees on use of a standard ball, and disagrees on increasing rosters from 23 to 25 players although Commissioner Judge Landis eventually decides on 25.

Boxing

  • In 1915 Jack Johnson is first African-American world heavyweight boxing champion.

College Football

  • In 1991 the 57th Heisman Trophy Award is given to Desmond Howard of Michigan (WR).

Hockey

  • In 1968 Bobby Orr scores first career hat trick.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1901 the first table tennis tournament is held (London Royal Aquarium).

NBA

  • In 1988 the Miami Heat win their first game ever, 89-88 over the Clippers, after 17 loses.

NFL

  • In 1958 Pat Summerall kicks game winning field goal for the New York Giants against the Cleveland Browns at Yankee Stadium.
