• In 1955 at the 17th NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship San Francisco beats La Salle, 77-63. Dons’ future Hall of Fame center Bill Russell is named tournament Most Outstanding Player

• In 1950 at the US Open Women’s Golf Babe Didrikson-Zaharias wins by 9 strokes from amateur Betsy Rawls
