  • In 1876 baseball’s first no-hitter, St Louis’ George W Bradley no-hits Hartford

Boxing

  • In 2018 Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao stops WBA welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse in 7 in Kuala Lumpur for his first knockout in 9 years and 60th career victory

Golf

  • In 1922 at the Men’s US Open, Gene Sarazen wins the first of his 7 major titles, 1 stroke ahead of runners-up John Black and 20-year-old amateur Bobby Jones

Miscellaneous

  • In 1815 the first flat horse race held at English race track Cheltenham on Nottingham Hill

NHL

  • In 2005 after declining an offer to remain with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Mike Babcock is named head coach of the Detroit Red Wings

  • In 1970 Denmark beats Italy 2-0 in the first world female soccer championship

Tennis

  • In 1895 at the Wimbledon Women’s Tennis, Charlotte Cooper beats Helen Jackson 7-5, 8-6 for her first of 5 Wimbledon singles titles
