Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1936 Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Johnny Moore hits 3 straight home runs in a 16-4 rout of the Pittsburgh Pirates

Boxing

  • In 1963 in their second clash Sonny Liston once again KOs Floyd Patterson in round 1 at the Convention Center, Las Vegas to retain the world heavyweight boxing title

Golf

  • In 1973 at the Women’s US Open, Susie Maxwell Berning wins by 5 from Gloria Ehret & Shelley Hamlin for her third national title

Miscellaneous

  • In 2018 Seattle basketball guard Sue Bird plays record 500th WNBA game as Storm go down 87-74 to the Atlanta Dream. Bird finishes career on 508 games for Seattle

NFL

  • In 2019 the Dallas Cowboys are named most valuable sports team in the world worth $5 billion, MLB New York Yankees 2nd at $4.6 billion, Real Madrid 3rd with $4.2 billion according to Forbes

NHL

  • In 2013 Mike Babcock is again named head coach of Team Canada, this time for the 2014 Winter Olympics (they would repeat as gold medalists)

Olympics

  • In 1912 the V Summer (Modern) Olympic Games close in Stockholm, Sweden

Tennis

  • In 1984 at the 22nd Federation Cup Women’s Tennis, São Paulo, Brazil: Czech pair Hana Mandlíková & Helena Suková beat Australians Elizabeth Sayers & Wendy Turnbull 6-2, 6-2 for a 2-1 victory
