Baseball

  • In 1901 Baltimore Orioles pitcher Joe McGinnity is suspended from NL for punching and spitting on umpire Tom Connolly in previous day’s 5-2 loss to Detroit Tigers. The lifetime suspension is reduced to 12 days

Golf

  • In 1920 PGA Championship, American based Scotsman Jock Hutchison beats J. Douglas Edgar of England, 1-up. It’s the first of Hutchinson’s 2 majors

Miscellaneous

  • In 1977 American water skier Donna Patterson Brice sets women’s high speed record 111.11 mph at Long Beach, California

Tennis

  • In 1900 at the US National Men’s Championship, Malcolm Whitman beats William Larned 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 to win his third straight US singles title
