  • In 1904 Champion James J. Jeffries scores a 2nd round TKO win over Jack Munroe in San Francisco. Jeffries retires after his 7th heavyweight boxing title defense

Golf

  • In 1946 PGA Championship, Ben Hogan beats Ed Oliver, 6 & 4 for first of his 9 major titles

Miscellaneous

  • In 1804 Alicia Thornton becomes first female jockey in England riding at Knavesmire in Yorkshire

Tennis

  • In 1895 at the US National Championship Men’s Tennis, Newport R.I.: Fred Hovey beats defending champion Robert Wrenn 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 for his lone major singles title
