Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1904 Boston Herald again refers to NY baseball club as Yankees, when it reports “Yankees take 2,” The Yankee name is not official till 1913

Boxing

  • In 1909 Jack Johnson retains his heavyweight boxing title when he fights Al Kaufman to a no decision in 10 rounds

Miscellaneous

  • In 1987 Larry Bird (Celtics), begins NBA free throw streak of 59

NFL

  • In 1960 Denver Broncos beat Boston Patriots, 13-10 in the American Football League’s first game before 21,597 fans at Nickerson Field in Boston

Tennis

  • In 1940 at the Women’s US National Championship, defending champion Alice Marble beats Helen Jacobs 6-2, 6-3 for her third US singles title
