Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1930 Phillies trailing 10-5, score 5 in 9th, then Pirates score 4 in top of 10th, so Phillies score 5 in bottom of 10th to win 15-14

Golf

  • In 1979 at the Ryder Cup, US wins, 17-11, new Team Europe replaces Great Britain & Ireland as official opposition to the United States

Miscellaneous

  • In 1885 Puritan (US) beats Genesta (England) in 6th running of America’s Cup

NFL

  • In 1937 Redskins NFL franchise play first game in Washington at Griffith Stadium, they defeat the New York Giants in season opener, 13–3

Tennis

  • In 1951 at the Women’s US Open, Betsy Rawls wins first of her 8 major titles, 5 strokes ahead of runner-up Louise Suggs
