The Class AA Western Conference Boy’s third place Capital Bruins made the trip to Missoula Saturday to play the top team in all of Class AA basketball, the Sentinel Spartans and Sentinel came out on top 72-52.
Sentinel came out on fire in the first quarter with Gaige Deshazer knocking down a pair of three pointers in the opening frame to help the Spartans take an early lead. Deshazer’s three point game was not the highlight in the first quarter, it would be Trey Kolb who anchored the stout lead scoring nine points in the first quarter to help Sentinel jump out to a 26-11 lead at the end of one.
The Bruins held the Spartans in the opening minutes of the second frame, keeping Sentinel from scoring until just over four minutes remaining in the half. Capital tightened down their defense in the second frame, holding Sam Beighle to three points in the first half. The Bruins battled to close out the half, out scoring Sentinel 12-7 in the second quarter to make it a 10 point game at the break.
Capital did their best to keep Beighle in check, at times triple teaming him when he had the ball. Sentinel showed why they are the top team in all of Class AA boy’s basketball and when the Bruins took Beighle away, other players stepped up. Deshazer finished the night as the leading scorer for the Spartans with 18 points, 12 coming from beyond the arc. Alex Germer, Trey Kolb, and Alex Germer all had 10 points a piece, adding to Deshazers efforts.
The Spartans will go on the road Tuesday to play the Flathead Braves.
