Spartans Out Gun Eagles For The Sweep

The Sentinel Spartans made the trip up South Avenue Thursday night to play the Big Sky Eagles in a crosstown doubleheader on the basketball court and the Spartans rode home with the sweep, the boy’s taking game one 58-50 and the the Lady Spartans won game two 83-43.

Sentinel was tuned up to start game one snagging the opening tip and Gaige Deshazer knocking down a three pointer to get the ball rolling for the Spartans. DeShazer dropped a pair of shots from beyond the arc to elevate Sentinel to a lead in the opening minutes of the game. The Spartans settled into their press defense and held the Eagles to limited opportunities on the offensive side of the court and lead 15-6 at the end of the opening period. Big Sky senior Jordan Casselman put the team on his shoulders and dropped a pair of the three pointers in the second quarter, but the Sentinel offense was to much as they would out score the Eagles 16-12 in the second quarter.

With a five point lead at the half Sentinel settled back on their heals a little bit and the Eagles surged back into the game, pulling within two on several occasions. The Spartans up one possession to start the fourth quarter Sentinel mounted an attack and out gunned the Eagles 21-10 in the final period to secure the win.

Game two started out even as both teams swooped scores in the opening possessions until Coach Deden of the Lady Spartans tightened down the screws by installing her suffocating full court press. Putting the pressure on Big Sky, Sentinel surged out to a 19-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Sentinel controlled the pace of the game from whistle to whistle and found themselves up 42-24 at the end of the first half, getting 12 points in the paint from Lexi Deden.

Holding a commanding lead to start the third quarter Sentinel pulled the cord and played their ruthless defense holding the Lady Eagles to four points while they added 15 of their own. Lauren Bingham came off the bench in the second half to score 10 of the benches 19 point contribution to help Sentinel cruse to a victory and put them one step closer to a city title.

The final crosstown match up of the season will happen Saturday night as the Sentinel Spartans host the Hellgate Knights. The boy’s tip off at 5:30 pm to get things going and the ladies will cap the night off 20 minutes after the boys finish up.
