When you walk through the halls of Sentinel high school in Missoula Montana there are many individuals that stand out, but their are few who have an electrifying personality as Nick Germer. Germer is a senior at Sentinel and has been a stand out athlete for the Spartans in multiple sports, his strongest being football and basketball.
The University of Montana football program recognized Germer for his abilities, offering him a spot on the team and Nick signed an early Letter of Intent to play for the Griz. Though Montana is the school Germer signed with, the Grizzlies were not the first to approach him. Germer knew he had the opportunity to play at the college level after his junior season when he received a text from Bobcat head coach Jeff Choate that they were looking at him. A few months later Coach Choate made an offer to Nick and shortly after the MSU offer Montana made their offer, Germer “had always been a Griz” so it made it easy to chose Montana.
Stepping on to the varsity football field as a junior it was evident he is a special athlete. Germer ripped 42 catches out of the air that netted him 745 yards and six touchdowns in the 10 games he played in. It was more than his game day abilities that proved he was a leader on the field, Germer stepped up in practice by keeping guys focused during drills and helping his fellow teammates when they need it. Spartan junior running-back Elias Dewaters talks about Germer’s leadership in the huddle, “Nick is always positive in the huddle, telling guys to shake the last play off and that they will get it back on the next play.”
Germer set out to over come an injury obstetrical he picked up over last summer and played his way past the injury racking up 861 yards in the 2017 season, averaging 16 catches a game, and pulled in another eight touchdowns. In his senior year Germer helped the Spartans push into the postseason and win his first ever postseason game over crosstown rival Big Sky Eagles. the Spartans would fall to State champion Billings Senior in the second round of the playoffs, ending their season on the road.
Not only is Germer an all-star wide receiver for the Spartans, but he is a force on the basketball too. Though Germer does not show up in the points stats, his presence is felt in the paint as he plays the forward position like Charles Barkley did in the 90’s. Nick had the unique opportunity to finish out his high school basketball career with his younger brother Alex, currently a freshman that came off the Sentinel varsity bench during the 2017-2018 season. Germer jokes with me about the fact that he and Alex fight on the basketball court in game, but at the end of the day Nick respects his brothers play, “I’m not really the shooting type off player, it’s cool giving it to my brother and having him do all the work and i get the rebound.” Germer went on to say that “Alex is a great shooter and it’s going to be fun to watch him in the next few years.”
Nick will join Missoula sports heroes David Koppang of the Loyola Rams and Big Sky Eagle Levi Janacaro on the Grizzly football team this fall and continue a Missoula tradition.
