The first round of the 2018 Softball tournaments kicked off Thursday across the state and the Loyola Breakers where in Belgrade for the Class B/C tournament facing the number one team out of the East and came away with an 8-7 win.
Head coach Troy Waters put the ball in the hands of his veteran pitcher Kayla Hickethier to lead Loyola from the pitchers circle and she did not disappoint. Hickethier took the challenge head on as she would allow seven runs, four of which where earned, walked three batters, and struck out 14 in the seven innings she pitched. In the 34 batters Hickethier faced she would throw a total of 137 pitches and she was able to get the players at the dish to swing for a strike on the first pitch 20 times.
From the plate the Breakers where lead by veteran third baseman Natalie Goodman who went 2-3, accounted for two runs, and was walked once, and struck out once. Goodman was helped out by Ivvy Solomon who went 2-4 with a pair of RBI’s and was struck out once. The Breakers catcher Carly Tipp want 1-1 from the dish, but earned two runs and had a pair of RBI’s, while Morgan Nicholson contributed with an RBI while going 2-3 from the dish.
The Breakers move on to the winners side of the bracket to face the number two team out of the West Eureka Lions today, first pitch from the Belgrade Softball Complex is at 10:00 am. The Western number one seeded Florence Falcons will play the number two team out of the East Huntley Project at 10:00 am.
