Week In Review 9/2

Football

The second week of the prep football season saw a crosstown game and a pair of road trips. Starting with the crosstown battle between the Big Sky Eagles and the Sentinel Spartans, the Eagles put up a good fight but the Sentinel high octane offense was to much and the Spartans claimed their second win of the season over Big Sky. The Hellgate Knights made a road trip east to play in the mad house against the Butte Bulldogs and the Knights defense could not keep up with the Bulldogs and Hellgate fell for the second week in a row. For the final game on Friday night the Loyola Rams took on the Whitehall Trojans in a Class B powerhouse match up and the Rams ran over the Trojans to finish with a win over Whitehall.

Volleyball

Starting at the top of Missoula prep volleyball the Sentinel Spartans are picking up where they left off last season dominating Class AA volleyball. Under their new volleyball coach the Big Sky Eagles are playing well, but are working on finishing matches in order to pull away with a win. Hellgate’s volleyball team has been a group on the rise over the past few seasons and are making strides again this year finding ways to win over the past week. The Breakers of Loyola Sacred-Heart find themselves with upper class leadership in 2018 which has kept them close in matches, and nearly knocked off a disciplined Bigfork early in the week.

Soccer

Hellgate boys soccer is the cream of the crop in Class AA soccer once again and they would sweep the Helena schools Thursday and Saturday, and the girls are playing tough with a sideline full of talent waiting to get on the field. Sentinel has risen to be a threat in Class AA boys soccer with back to back dominating games against the Helena schools, while the girls did their part to knock off the Helena schools home and away. Big Sky faced the Kalispell schools this week and saw growth within the boys and girls programs and the Eagles will be a team to recon with as the season wears on.

Golf

The annual trip to Fairmont Hot Springs for the Farimont invite for Montana Prep golf happened Tuesday and Wednesday and the Missoula schools played well, with all three schools seeing seeing improvements stroke by stroke. Sentinel continues to play as a school to recon with in Montana AA high schools golf while the Big Sky boys anchor their school, Hellgate’s youth show signs of feature dominance in prep golf with every event played.

Cross Country

After a long wait the Missoula Class AA schools started their 2018 cross country season by hosting the coaches invite at the Missoula equestrian park. Hellgate started off showing they are the team every one needs keep pace with in order to have a chance in Class AA Montana cross country in 2018 with three runners placing in the top five on the boys side, the girls taking the top four positions. The Sentinel Spartan girls are young this year and will prophet from the experience they gain this fall while the boys where able to place five in the top ten an the coached invite. Big Sky boys are anchored by their senior Sean Stineford who placed fifth at the invite, and Bryce Parks was the next highest placed at 22nd. The Eagle girls placed three in the top ten at the coaches invite and had a surprise placement by freshman Freya Jones who finished 10th.
