On a cloudy Thursday afternoon the Helena Bengal soccer teams made the trip over the mountains to Missoula to take on the Big Sky Eagles and the day would end with the two schools spitting with the Big Sky girls taking the first game 5-1 and the Helena boys dominating the second game with a 6-0 win.
It was ladies first on the soccer pitch at Big Sky and from the start it was a game that put the fans on the edge of their seat as the action went back and forth. The game was played between the 18 yard boxes for the majority of the time with goals coming on break away runs and not off deflections and set pieces. Big Sky keeper Grace Denman saw minimal action as the Bengals were only allowed 11 shots on goal, with Denman coming up with four saves on the day.
For the boys it was total dominance by the Bengals as they delivered a shut out to the Eagle boys. Right out of the gate Helena went on the attack but the big Sky defense did well to hold off the Bengals in the first half with the ball not finding the back off the net for Helena until the ninth minute. The Bengals controlled the ball with es that could only be matched by the Hellgate Knights, dropping the ball to the defenders when on the attack to reset the offense, and running down any type of press by the Eagles. It was a complete team effort by the Helena in the win over the Eagles as six different Bengals would put the ball in the back of the net on a total of 31 shots.
