As the regular season for high school basketball looms in view Arlee and Loyola played a doubleheader Tuesday night that found the two schools splitting the night.
Scarlet’s 62
Breakers 70
In the first game of the night it would be ladies first as two of the top teams in each others respective classes took to the court. From the tip off it promised to be a good game with the Breakers and Scarlet’s swapping shots back and forth, keeping the game close. Arlee had a solid game plan that worked well for them in the first half as they worked the ball in to the paint to senior forward Alyssia Vanderburg who dropped 16 points in the first half.
Down by nine to start the second half the Breakers had the ball and went to work installing their half time adjustments and began to chip away at the Scarlet’s lead. Breakers starters Lani Walker and Sam Clevenger went to work on the offensive side of the court, while the entire team put in work on the defensive end of the court to keep Vanderburg’s hands off the ball. With the game tied at 47 to start the final frame Loyola swung the momentum in their direction elevating them to the win.
Warriors 68
Rams 66
For the Tuesday night night cap at the RAC it would be the boys who took to the court in a game that was electrifying from the tip off. Just as the Scarlets had a game plan of working the ball in to the paint to their post player, the Warriors had a 6″ 9″ senior in Isaac Fisher who controlled the boards with his length. Loyola played hard nosed basketball against the height of Fisher by taking the ball hard to the hoop which in turn forced the Arlee post player into foul trouble.
With a five point lead the Rams went back to playing hard nosed basketball in the third quarter to once again neutralize the Warriors forward by sending Fisher to the bench with foul trouble. Loyola looked to control the second half with Jack Lincoln taking control in the third quarter as the senior guard racked up 10 points, finishing with 25 points on the night to lead all scorers. The Rams would hold a 53-48 lead to start the fourth quarter and Arlee went to work as Lane Johnson put his team on his back scoring 12 of the Warriors 20 points in the final frame, sneaking away with a win at the buzzer on the off balanced shot of Cody Tanner from beyond the arc.
