To open up the month of February the Hellgate girls basketball team would face the top two teams in the Class AA Western Conference and finished 0-2 after Saturdays 51-42 loss to the Capital Lady Bruins.
One thing that stands out about the Lady Knights since Rob Henthorn took over as the head coach is that the girls are having fun on the court and this season Hellgate has turned that into a third place spot in the Western Conference, and sixth place spot overall. Coming off a loss to the top team in all of Class AA basketball in the Helena Lady Bengals, the Lady Knights played host to the third ranked Lady Bruins.
In the opening quarter the girls had to warm up from the chill out side in order to get into a grove on the court as the two teams would finish the first frame with a combined 11 points. Having brushed off the cold in the first quarter both sides began to knock down their shots, but just before the mid way point of the second quarter Hellgate went cold and Capital slipped away from the Lady Knights to take a 17-14 lead when the buzzer went off to mark the end of the first half.
Both coaches made their half time adjustments and the two teams hit the floor ready to play, it was the Lady Bruins who were able to set their game plan in motion by out scoring Hellgate 18-10 in the third quarter to stretch their lead out going in to the final frame. Hellgate freshman Addy Heaphy went to work in the fourth quarter for the Lady Knights from the point by knocking down a pair of three’s that cut the Capital lead to single digits, but the Lady Bruins clamped down their defense and pushed the lead back to double digits to help seal the win.
