The final game of day two at the Class AA Western Divisional tournament was a match between the Sentinel Spartans and the Capital Bruins that found the Bruins coming away with a 53-51 win over the Spartans.
Capital came out shooting from the jump as the e Bruins would go on a scoring rampage that put the Spartans in a whole. The first quarter was a struggle for Sentinel as the Bruins would out score the Spartans 13-6 in the opening quarter, the lowest scoring quarter in the game for Sentinel.
With the first quarter in the books Sentinel buckled down on the defensive end of the court which brought scoring opportunities on the break that allowed the Spartans to crack the double digit mark with 14 points. Both teams played a clean half as Capital never made it to the charity stripe while Sentinel went 0-2, and despite a slow start Sentinel would finish the half shooting 41% from the field.
Down by eight to start the third quarter Sentinel came out of the locker room and began to plug away at the Bruins lead. It was not until the 2:15 mark that Sentinel would tie the game at 35, and then after a display of back and forth shooting the Spartans took the lead from Capital with 16 seconds left in the third frame.
Having spent the second and third quarters working to get back in the game Sentinel would pull ahead momentarily at the start of the fourth quarter. Seeing the momentum shifting in favor of Sentinel the Capital bench would call series of timeouts to stall the Sentinel offense. Late in the fourth quarter the tank began to run low for the Spartans and Capital surged back ahead of Sentinel to claim the win.
Sentinel will play in the consolation semi-final Saturday morning against the host team Glacier Wolfpack.
