Hellgate’s Defense Suffocates Capital In Western Divisional Championship Game

The final game of the 2019 Class AA Western Conference Tournament would be the championship game between the Hellgate Knights and the Capital Bruins with the Knights taking home th etop spot in the west with a 59-35 win over Capital.

Capital would pull down the tip off and run the court to score the first point off of a three pointer, from there the Knights jumped on the gun and ran out to a 7-0 run. The game became physical right out of the gate as the whistle would rule most of the first quarter, giving Hellgate the advantage as the Knights played a more controlled game then Capital.

Maintaining control of the pace of the game Hellgate ruled the second quarter off of the fast break, while limiting the Bruins second chance points on the opposite end of the court. Hellgate rock star Rollie Worster reeked havoc on both ends of the floor, putting in work on the defensive side of the ball while running the offense, jettisoning the Knights to a 23 point lead to end the first half.

Up 34-11 to start the second half Hellgate kept there foot on the gas pedal as the Knights would stretch the lead out. Capital refused to give up on the game and continued to battle back against a suffocating Hellgate defense. When the Bruins where able to get a clear shot at the hoop Hellgate’s post players would shut down any opportunity for a second chance shot, limiting any hope of Capital coming back.

Still on the run the Knights would surge through the opening portion of the final frame, keeping up their work on the boards to hold off the Bruins. Seeing the end in sight coach Hays looked to his bench and gave the second string players quality time on the court to finish out the game. On the legs of a high powered offense and a ruthless defense the Knights cruised to the number one spot in the west going into state.
