Girls Basketball
We start with the Loyola Breakers who had a challenge game last week against the Deer Lodge Lady Wardens to earn a right to play in the Class B State Tournament. After well fought battle the between Loyola and Deer Lodge the Breakers would come out victorious to punch their ticket to the state tourney.
The Glacier Wolfpack played host for the Class AA Western Divisional Tournament which would see the end of the season for two of Missoula’s Class AA schools. Big Sky would be the first Missoula girls team out of the tournament as the Lady Eagles would fall on Friday to end the their season.
Sentinel faced the same fate as the Lady Eagles after dropping to the consolation side of the bracket after falling to their crosstown nemesis for the third time this season. The Lady Spartans basketball season came to halt Saturday morning when Sentinel lost to the Glacier Wolfpack in a tight game.
Missoula Hellgate girls will head to their first state title in a long while after knocking off the Lady Spartans to open the the tournament, and then upsetting the top team in Class AA girls basketball in the Helena Bengals in the semi final. Hellgate then went on to place second in the girls portion of the western divisional.
Boys Basketball
Just as their female counterparts the Loyola Rams would be challenged by the Mission Bulldogs to be one of two teams to represent the west at the Class B boys basketball state tournament. In an uneven match up the Rams would dismantle Bulldogs to join the Bigfork Vikings at the state tournament.
Joining the girls in Kalispell the Missoula County Public Schools bays basketball squads would have two of three teams punch their ticket tot he Class AA state tourney in Butte America. For the Big Sky Eagles it was the end of a season that saw growth on the court that resulted in renewed culture.
Having to fight their way to gain a bid to the state tournament the Spartans of Sentinel earned a trip to the boys semi-finals after an impressive opening win, but fell to the consolation side of the bracket after a devastating loss to Capital. Sentinel then went on to earn the third place seed after going on a two game win streak Saturday.
Proving they are the top team in all of Class AA basketball the Hellgate Knights tore through the competition on their way to the state tournament. The Knights would pick off their opponents one by one on their way to representing the west as the number one seed going into the state tournament this coming weekend
