Today In Sports History 5/7

Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates short stop Glenn Wright recorded an unassisted triple play against the Cardinals. Wright would tagging out Jimmy Cooney and future Hall of Famers’ Jim Bottomley and Rogers Hornsby.

Basketball

  • In 1969 the American Basketball Association (ABA) would hold its second championship series where the Oakland Oaks beat the Indiana Pacers four games to one.

Football

  • in 1982 a federal jury rules the NFL violated antitrust laws in preventing the Oakland Raiders being moved to Los Angeles.

Hockey

  • In 2010 the opening match of the 2010 world hockey championship between Germany and the United States is viewed by a world record crowd of 77,803 (validated by a representative of the Guinness World Book of Records) at the Veletins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Germany would go on to defeat the USA 2-1 in overtime.

Olympics

  • In 1951 the International Olympic committee would allow Russia to participate in the 1952 Olympics, marking the first time a Russian athlete competed in the Olympics since the Soviet Union was established in 1922.
