Baseball

  • In 1956 Mickey Mantle hits a home run that just misses clearing Yankee Stadium’s roof.

Basketball

  • In 1983 the Philadelphia 76ers sweep the LA Lakers in 4 games in the 37th NBA Championship.

Football

  • In 1985 the New Orleans Saints are sold for $70,204,000.

Golf

  • In 1949 in the PGA Championship Sam Snead beats fellow American Johnny Palmer 3 & 2, it’s the first time reigning Masters champion wins PGA Championship in the same calendar year.

Hockey 

  • In 1987 the Edmonton Oilers beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-1 to win the Stanley Cup Final title 4 games to 3, it’s the Oilers’ 3rd Stanley Cup Final.

  • In 1880 the League of American Wheelmen, the first US bicycle association forms in Newport, Rhode Island.
