Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1889 the Louisville Colonels set a Major League baseball record with 26 consecutive losses.

Basketball

  • In 1994 the Houston Rockets beat the New York Knicks 4 games to 3 for the 48th NBA Championship.

Boxing

  • In 1949 Ezzard Charles beats Jersey Joe Walcott in 15 rounds for a National Boxing Association world heavyweight title.

Golf

  • In 1958 Patty Berg wins back-to-back WO titles after beating runner-up Beverly Hanson by 4 strokes at the LPGA Western Open Women’s Golf tournament.

Hockey

  • In 1983 the NHL institutes a five minute sudden death overtime period.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1874 the game of lawn tennis is introduced.

Soccer 

  • In 1994 at the FIFA World Cup the USA beats Colombia 2-1 in round match at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena California, it’s the first World Cup win since 1950.
