Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1917 Hank Gowdy is the first baseball player to enter WW I military service.

Basketball

  • In 2013 at the NBA Draft UNLV power forward Anthony Bennett is first pick going to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Boxing

  • In 1890 George Dixon becomes 1st black boxing champ (Bantam weight).

Football

  • In 1984 the Supreme Court ends NCAA monopoly on college football telecasts.

Golf

  • In 1924 American Walter Hagen wins his 2nd Open Championships, 1 stroke ahead of runner-up Ernest Whitcombe at the British Open Golf.

Hockey

  • In 2014 the NHL Coyotes franchise changes geographic name from “Phoenix” to “Arizona” after change of ownership.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1894 American Annie Londonderry, Annie Kopchovsky, sets out to become first woman to bicycle around the world. Londonberry completes her journey September 1895.

Soccer

  • In 1954 The so-called “Battle of Berne” occurs during the FIFA World Cup match between Brazil and Hungary as the game descends into an all-out brawl.
