Baseball

  • In 1919 Babe Ruth ties Ned Williamson’s major league mark of 27 homeruns.

Boxing

  • In 1939 Joe Louis KOs Bob Pastor in the 11th round for heavyweight boxing title.

Football

  • In 1987 Chicago running back Walter Payton scores his NFL record 107th rushing touchdown in the Bears’ 20-3 victory over Tampa Bay.

Golf

  • In 1913 at the men’s US Open 20-year old amateur Francis Ouimet wins his only Open title in an 18-hole playoff, 5 strokes ahead of Britons Harry Vardon & Ted Ray.

  • In 1973 Billie Jean King beats Bobby Riggs in battle-of-sexes tennis match.
