Baseball

  • In 1909 Ty Cobb steals home in World Series game.

Football

  • In 1938 the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears play a penalty free NFL game.

Golf

  • In 1965 at the Ryder Cup, US beats Great Britain 19½-12½. Byron Nelson non-playing American captain; Harry Weetman GB skipper.

Hockey

  • In 1974 the Washington Capitals play their first NHL game, losing 6-3 to NY Rangers at Madison Square Garden Wash Caps begin a 37 game road losing streak.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1915 Woodrow Wilson becomes the first US President to attend a World Series game.
