The 2017 American Legion Baseball season will get underway this Saturday and the Missoula Mavericks will be at home to open the season. The Mavs will host the Great Falls Chargers in a season opening doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm at Lindborg-Cregg Field.
The Mavericks sailed through the 2016 season winning over 90% of their games to earn them the top spot in the state championship tournament that they would also host. The Mavs would run into a tough Billings Scarlet’s team in the postseason tournament and fall short of their aspirations. The end to the season left the returning players hungry for another shot at a state title.
Though many of the 2016 Mavericks have moved on and are continuing on in their lives, a large portion have returned to earn a state title. For some of the returning players it is going to be a summer of double duty as they will be preparing for the next level in either baseball or football or to serve or country in the military.
The biggest returning factor is a silent icon in Missoula in their skipper Brent Hathaway. The seasoned Mavericks manager will be returning for a 34th season to mentor young student athletes. In addition to being the manager of the Missoula Mavericks, Hathaway is a teacher in the Missoula Valley, extending his mentor ship beyond the baseball diamond.
All teams in the Montana Canadian American Legion baseball league will be striving win the state championship in order to represent the league at the divisional tournament that will be held here in Missoula at the beginning of August at Ogren Park Allegiance Field.
