Baseball

  • In 1956 Detroit Tigers & Briggs Stadium sold for then record $5.5 million

Football

  • In 1994 Shreveport Pirates lose first CFL home game, 35-34 to the Toronto Argonauts at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, Louisiana

Golf

  • In 1938 PGA Championship, 1934 champion Paul Runyan dominates the heavily favored Sam Snead, 8 & 7. It is the largest victory margin ever in the event’s match play format

Miscellaneous

  • In 1845 the NY Yacht Club holds its first regatta

Soccer

  • In 1950 at the FIFA World Cup Final, Estádio do Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Alcides Ghiggia scores a 79th minute winner as Uruguay beats Brazil, 2-1

Tennis

  • In 1888 at the Wimbledon Men’s Tennis, 3-time runner-up Ernest Renshaw wins his lone major title. Renshaw beats defending champion Herbert Lawford 6-3, 7-5, 6-0
