Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1915 Chicago White Sox obtain ‘Shoeless’ Joe Jackson from Cleveland for Robert Roth, Larry Chappell, Ed Klepfer and $31,500. Jackson is involved in ‘Black Sox Scandal’ 1919

Golf

  • In 1944 at the PGA Championship, Bob Hamilton wins his only major title, 1 up in the 36-hole final over heavily favored Byron Nelson

Miscellaneous

  • In 1922 1st Women’s World Games (first track & field competition for women) is conducted over 1-day at the Pershing Stadium in Paris

NFL

  • In 1920 American Professional Football Association forms. Jim Thorpe installed as president, later to become the National Football League (NFL)

Tennis

  • In 1888 the longest US men’s single tennis tournament match Palmer Presbrey defeats T S Tailer, 19-21, 8-6, 6-1, 6-4, an 80 game 1st-round contest
