Baseball

  • In 1925 after a night on the town, Babe Ruth shows up late for batting practice Miller Huggins suspends Ruth and slaps a $5,000 fine on him

Boxing

  • In 1885 boxing’s 1st heavyweight title fight with 3-oz gloves and 3-minute rounds fought between John L Sullivan and Dominick McCaffrey

Golf

  • In 1908 US Open Men’s Golf, Fred McLeod defeats fellow Scot Willie Smith by 6 strokes in an 18-hole playoff to win his only major title

Miscellaneous

  • In 1889 the first American International professional lawn tennis contest is held (Newport, Rhode Island)

Tennis

  • In 1906 US National Championship Men’s Tennis, William Clothier beats defending champion Beals Wright 6-3, 6-0, 6-4
