Baseball

  • In 1903 Baseball’s National and American Leagues make peace.

Boxing

  • In 1942 in his 20th title defence, Joe Louis KOs Buddy Baer in the 1st round of their rematch to retain his world heavyweight boxing title.

College Basketball

  • In 1953 Bevo Francis of Rio Grande College scores 116 points in a game.

College Football

  • In 2012 at the 14th BCS National Championship, #2 Alabama beats #1 LSU, 21-0.

Golf

  • In 1811 the first Women’s Golf Tournament is held.

Hockey

  • In 1930 the Boston Bruins wins a then NHL record 14th straight game.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1977 at the Australian Open Men’s Tennis, American Roscoe Tanner wins his first and only Grand Slam event; beats Guillermo Vilas of Argentina 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

NBA

  • In 1947 the Providence Steamrollers guard Dino Martin becomes the first NBA player to ever score 40 points in a game, in a 91-68 win over Cleveland Rebels.

NFL

  • In 1962 the NFL prohibits grabbing of face masks.
