Baseball

  • In 1921 Babe Ruth, Bob Meusel, and Bill Piercy defy Landis ban on World Series.

Basketball

  • In 1968 the Milwaukee Bucks play their first game losing 89-84 to the Chicago Bulls.

Boxing

  • In 1909 Jack Johnson KOs Stanley Ketchel in the 12th round for the heavyweight boxing title.

Football

  • In 1921 Jim Conzelman takes over as coach of Rock Island Independents from Frank Coughlin, the only mid-game coaching change in NFL history.

Golf

  • In 1983 at the Ryder Cup the US wins 14½-13½; Bernard Gallacher’s missed 3-foot putt for bogey gives Tom Watson 2 & 1 win and the US winning point.

Hockey

  • In 1976 Toronto Maple Leaf Lanny McDonald scores a hat trick in 2 minutes 54 seconds.

  • In 1949 the first NASCAR Sprint Cup, Red Byron wins.
