Baseball

  • In 1921 Babe Ruth, Bob Meusel, & Bill Piercy defy Landis ban on World Series

Boxing

  • In 1909 in his 4th title defense Jack Johnson KOs Stanley Ketchel in the 12th round to retain his heavyweight boxing crown

Golf

  • In 1983 at the Ryder Cup Golf, US wins 14½-13½. Bernard Gallacher’s missed 3-foot putt for bogey gives Tom Watson 2 & 1 win and the US winning point

Miscellaneous

  • In 1949 1st NASCAR Sprint Cup: Red Byron wins

  • In 1921 Jim Conzelman takes over as coach of Rock Island Independents from Frank Coughlin-only mid-game coaching change in NFL history
