• In 1957 Montreal Canadian Maurice “Rocket” Richard, becomes the first player to score 500 goals

Tennis

• In 1974 Australian tennis star Evonne Goolagong wins her first WTA Tour Championship, beats Chris Evert 6-3, 6-4 in the final at the Los Angeles Sports Arena
