Today In Sports History 11/13

Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1900 the Baltimore Orioles (now NY Yankees) enter baseball’s American League.

Basketball

  • In 1964 Bob Petit (St Louis Hawks) becomes 1st NBA player to score 20,000 points.

Boxing

  • In 1982 WBA lightweight champion Ray Mancini beats South Korean challenger Duk Koo Kim by TKO in 14th round in Las Vegas. Kim collapses, falls into a coma and dies 4 days later; as a result, WBC shortens title bouts to 12 rounds; WBA & WBO follow in 1988, and IBF in 1989.

College Football

  • In 1875 Harvard-Yale game is the first college football contest with uniforms.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1907 French cyclist Paul Cornu flies the first helicopter (twin rotor).
