Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1957 Warren Spahn of the Braves wins Cy Young Award.

Boxing

  • In 1906 Tommy Burns and Jack O’Brien fight to a draw after 20 rounds for heavyweight boxing title.

College Football

  • In 1938 the 4th Heisman Trophy Award is awarded to Davey O’Brien, Texas Christian (QB).

Hockey

  • In 1925 NHL goalie Georges Vezina collapses and dies 4 months later of TB.

Golf

  • In 1965 at the LPGA Titleholders Championship Kathy Whitworth wins by 10 shots from Peggy Wilson for her first major title.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1895 America’s first auto race organised by the “Chicago Times-Herald.” Six cars race from Chicago to Evanston and back. Frank Duryea wins averaging 7 MPH.

NFL

  • In 1929 Chicago fullback Ernie Nevers sets NFL record for most points scored in a single game with all 40 in the Cardinals’ 40–6 rout of Chicago Bears. Nevers has NFL record 6 touchdowns and 4 extra points.
