Baseball

  • In 1942 Bill Terry resigns as supervisor of New York Giants minor league system.

Basketball

  • In 1983 Denver Nuggets coach Doug Moe, hopelessly behind, advises the team to let Blazers break their scoring record.

Boxing

  • In 1956 At 21 years, 10 months, 3 weeks, 5 days Floyd Patterson becomes youngest world heavyweight boxing champion; KOs Archie Moore in 5th round in Chicago; first Olympic gold medalist to win a professional heavyweight title.

College Football

  • In 1893 at the 2nd Iron Bowl Auburn beats Alabama 40-16 in Montgomery.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1872 the First international soccer game is played, Scotland draws with England (0-0) in Glasgow.

NFL

  • In 1924 in the National Football League Championship the Cleveland Bulldogs with a record of 7-1-1 (formerly Canton), win first past the post title.
