Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1883 the Philadelphia Phillies make 27 errors against Providence (wild pitches, walks and pass balls counted as errors prior to 1888).

Basketball

  • In 2008 the star-studded American women’s basketball team led by the likes of Lisa Leslie, Sue Bird & Diana Taurasi win the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics with a convincing 92-65 win over Australia.

Boxing

  • In 1933 the first televised boxing match – Archie Sexton & Laurie Raiteri in London.

Football

  • In 1946 the 13th NFL Chicago All-Star Game: All-Stars 16, Los Angeles 0.

Golf

  • In
  • 2009 at the Solheim Cup Women’s, US wins third consecutive Cup 16-12; win 8 of 12 singles to dominate final day.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1969 Audrey McElmory (US) wins World Cycling Championships, Brno Czechoslovakia.

Olympics 

  • In 1920 American swimmer Warren Kealoha wins first of two consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 100m backstroke, beating team mate Ray Kegeris at the Antwerp Games.
