Today In Sports History 3/21

Our past was shaped by many things in history including sports, here is what was written in the history books today.

Cycling has been a competitive sport dating back to before the 1900’s starting in Europe, but it was not until this day in 1909 that the first multi day race took place. It would be the United States that would finish at the top with the two man team of Moran and MacFarland claiming the victory in Berlin.

On this day in history the gentleman’s sport of boxing had it’s world rocked as Joe Louis would take down Abe Simon in 13 rounds to take the away the heavyweight boxing title. Louis went on to be widely regarded as the first African American to achieve the status of a nationwide hero within the United States.

The Los Angels Rams found themselves in the history books many times since their conception, but on this day in 1946 the Rams would sign Kenny Washington for ever changing NFL history. With the Rams adding Washington the 12 year ban of African Americans players in the NFL ended after the running back from UCLA had been passed up before by the league.

Basketball has always found it’s way into the history books since it was first conceived, but on this day back in 1953 it had a different kind of mark in history. In a game between Boston and Syracuse the two teams would finish with a combined 106 fouls that resulted in 12 players fouling out of the game.
