Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today. Many believed that the boycott was in response to the U. S.’s boycott of the 1980 Olympics due to the Soviet Unions intervention in Afghanistan in 1979.

Baseball

  • In 1959 New York Giants pitcher Jim Hearn allows two runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the game would be suspended, Hearn is released shortly after and the loss is charged to him two months after his retirement.

Basketball

  • In 1973 the New York Knicks beat the Los Angeles Lakers in four games to one in the 27th NBA Championship.

Boxing

  • In 1870 English boxer Jem Mace defends his his heavyweight boxing title against Irish Champion Joe Coburn in a match that would last one hour and 17 minutes with neither striking a punch.

Hockey

  • In 1970 the Boston Bruins sweep the Saint Louis Blues in four games of the Stanley Cup Final.
