Today In Sports History 5/6

Our past has shaped present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history.

Baseball

  • In 1915 Babe Ruth would make his pitching debut as Boston Red Sox, and hit his first home run in a game that the Red Sox lost to the New York Yankees 4-3 in 15 innings.

Basketball

  • In 1997 Rick Pitino becomes the head coach of the Boston Celtics, spending four of his six seasons as a head coach in the NBA with the Celtics.

Boxing

  • In 1973 professional boxing had it’s first international match featuring Bob Whittaker of Great Britain beating the Venetian Tito di Carni.

Hockey

  • In 1988 New Jersey Devils’ coach Jim Schoenfeld is superseded by the league for telling a referee to “eat another doughnut you fat pig”

Miscellaneous

  • In 1863 the first athletic wound be founded in in San Francisco, The San Francisco Olympic Club.

Soccer

  • In 1921 soccer would officially make it’s way to America when the American Soccer League was formed.
