Today In Sports History 5/8

Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today. Many believed that the boycott was in response to the U. S.’s boycott of the 1980 Olympics due to the Soviet Unions intervention in Afghanistan in 1979.

Baseball

  • In 1947 a movement among St. Louis Cardinals players to protest the their first meeting against Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers is aborted by a talk from owner Sam Breadon.

Boxing

  • In 1971 in “The Fight OF The Century Joe Frazer would beat boxing legend Muhannad Ali by unanimous decision after 15 rounds at Madison Square Garden In New York City.

Hockey

  • In 1988 amateur referees would officiate the New Jersey Devils vs Boston Bruins playoff series due the NHL referees walked-off because of a restraining order by the Devils.

Olympics

  • In 1984 the Soviet Union would announce that they will boycott the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles California. Many believed that the boycott was due to the U.S.’s boycott of the 1980 Olympics that where held in Moscow.

Rugby

  • In 1866 the sport of Australian Rules football is created in an effort to create a sport that is was adopted from English high school football, but with an Australian that is more suitable for adults.
