Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1944 relief pitcher Joe Nuxhall at 15 years and 316 days, debuts for Cincinnati Reds as the youngest player in MLB history, later becoming an All Star and broadcaster.

Basketball

  • In 1990 the Detroit Pistons beat the Portland Trailblazers for first time since 1974 in Portland.

Golf

  • In 1933 Amateur Johnny Goodman outlasts Ralph Guldahl by a single stroke to win his only major championship at the US Open Men’s Golf Tournament at North Shore CC.

Hockey

  • In 1996 Uwe Krupp’s unassisted goal in triple-OT gives the Colorado Avalanche a 1-0 win over the Florida Panthers and a 4 game series sweep in the Stanley Cup Final.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1956 at the XVI Summer Olympic the equestrian events open in Stockholm.

Soccer

  • In 1934 in the FIFA World Cup Final in  Rome, Italy:,Angelo Schiavio scores the winner in extra time as Italy beats Czechoslovakia, 2-1.
