Today In Sports History 6/11

Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1992 the US Olympic baseball team plays in it’s first exhibition game, beating Venez 20-0.

Boxing

  • In 1982 Larry Holmes TKOs Gerry Cooney in 13 rounds for heavyweight boxing title.

Golf

  • In 1950 at the 50th US Open Men’s Golf, 16 months after being severely injured in an auto accident, Ben Hogan beats Lloyd Mangrum by 4 shots and George Fazio by 6 in an 18-hole playoff later to be called the “Miracle at Merion”.

Hockey

  • In 2012 the LA Kings defeat the New Jersey Devils, 6-1 for 4-2 series win; it’s the first Stanley Cup title in the Kings’ 45-year history.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1992 Owners approve the sale of Seattle Mariners to a Japanese group.
