Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1880 John Lee Richmond pitches the first major league perfect game, Worcester 1, Cleveland’s Forest City 0.

Basketball

  • In 2002 the Los Angeles Lakers beat the New Jersey Nets to sweep 4-0 in NBA finals, Lakers center Shaquille O’Neal earned MVP.

Boxing

  • In 1930 German boxer Max Schmeling beats Jack Sharkey by disqualification in 4 rounds, it’s first time a world heavyweight boxing title is won on a foul.

Golf

  • In 1936 for the LPGA Western Open Women’s Golf Championship, Opal Hill scores a 3 & 2 win over Mrs. Charkes Dennehy to claim her second consecutive major title.

Hockey

  • In 2016 the Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the San Jose Sharks 3-1 for a 4-2 Stanley Cup Final victory; earning the Penguins their fourth title.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1916, for the 30th U.S. Women’s National Championship Molla Bjurstedt beats Louise Hammond Raymond (6-0, 6-1).
