Today In Sports History 6/13

Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1973 first baseman Steve Garvey, second baseman Davey Lopes, third baseman Ron Cey and shortstop Bill Russell play together for 1st time, they would go on to set a record of staying together as an infield for 8½ years  for the LA Dodgers.

Basketball

  • In 1989 the Detroit Pistons sweep the LA Lakers in four games to win the 43rd NBA Championship.

Boxing

  • In 1908 Tommy Burns KOs Bill Squires in 8 rounds for the heavyweight boxing title.

Golf

  • In 1953 Ben Hogan wins a record-tying 4th US Open title 6 strokes ahead of runner-up Sam Snead at the US Open Men’s Golf.

Hockey

  • In 1991 NHL owners present contract to players, leads to Apr 1, 1992 strike.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1895 Emile Levassor wins the first automobile race in history, the Paris-Bordeaux-Paris. The race would take Levassor 48 hours and 48 minutes to go the 1,178 km.

Soccer

  • In 2018 the FIFA Congress votes to award the 2026 World Cup to joint bid by US, Canada & Mexico.
