Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.
Baseball
- In 1917 In contradiction of a state law, the Robins (Dodgers) play their first Sunday MLB game in Brooklyn. Owner and manager are arrested but escape with a fine.
Basketball
- In 1995 All NBA business apart from the Draft is suspended until a new collective bargaining agreement is made with the players – no games lost.
Boxing
- In 1997 Nevada Athletic Commission suspends Mike Tyson indefinitely & withholds $20 million purse for biting Evander Holyfield’s ear during their heavyweight title fight 28 June.
Football
- In 1974 NFL players go on strike for 41 days challenging the “Rozelle Rule” but had to wait until 1977 for new collective bargaining agreement.
Golf
- In 1956 at the LPGA Western Open Women’s Beverly Hanson wins by four strokes from Louise Suggs, it’s her second of her three major titles.
Hockey
- In 1996 Canadian NHL franchise Winnipeg Jets officially moves to Arizona, renamed the Phoenix Coyotes.
Miscellaneous
- In 1893 the San Francisco Bay City Club opens the first US bicycle race track, made of wood.
Olympics
- In 1904 the third Summer (Modern) Olympic Games open in St Louis, the first held in the United States.
