Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1918 Tris Speaker suspended for season due to assault on umpire Tom Connolly.

Basketball

  • In 2004 the US women’s basketball team goes through the Athens Olympics undefeated to take out it’s 5th Olympic gold medal, beating Australia 74-63 in the final.

Football

  • In 1942 at the 9th NFL Chicago All-Star Game: Chicago Bears 21, All-Stars 0.

Golf

  • In 1988 the 88th US Golf Amateur Championship won by Eric Meeks.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1886 at the US National Championship Men’s Tennis, Richard Sears beats R. Livingston Beeckman 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 for his 6th consecutive US singles title.

Olympics 

  • In 1920 Ethelda Bleibtrey leads an American medal sweep of the Antwerp Olympics women’s 300m freestyle with a world record swim of 4:34.0.
