Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1922 catcher Butch Henline is 1st NLer to hit 3 HRs in a game since 1897

Boxing

  • In 1953 boxing’s NBA adopts 10-pt-must-scoring-system (10 pts to round winner)

Golf

  • In 1870 at the Men’s British Open, Tom Morris, Jr. wins third straight title. Morris again beats Bob Kirk, this time by 12 strokes

Miscellaneous

  • In 1960 Maurice Richard announces his retirement. He finishes his career with 544 goals, an NHL record at the time.

NFL

  • In 1940 the third American Football League plays it’s first game (Milw 14, Columbus 2)

Tennis

  • In 1923 at the Men’s US National Championship, Bill Tilden wins 4th of 6 straight US singles titles. Tilden beats Bill Johnston 6-4, 6-1, 6-4
